VDM uses digital technology (which it dubs “print-to-order [PTO], a further development of the print-on-demand [POD] procedure”) to make its books and monographs “available” (which just means they can be special-ordered) through online and physical booksellers.

If you only want your thesis to be made available to more readers, there are many acceptable self-publishing and/or open access options. If you want to get academic credit beyond the qualification gained from publishing the thesis then there is no short cut: you need to publish with peer-reviewed journals or book publishers.

VDM, in other words, is an academic author mill. They aren’t really publishing your dissertation, they aren’t making it available for other scholars, and they most certainly aren’t going to help you pay off your student loans. VDM Publishing is designated as non-scientific by the Norwegian Scientific Index. The first publishing house of the group, Verlag Dr Müller, was founded in Düsseldorf in 2002 by Wolfgang Philipp Müller (usually named Dr. Wolfgang P. Müller) and was transferred to Saarbrücken in August 2005.
